St Michael's Parish Church and its History

St Michael's Church

The Parish Church of North Waltham is St Michael’s, on the south side of the village.

There has been Christian worship in North Waltham since around 1200AD and the Church still plays an important part in village life with services every Sunday, and church members are represented in most village groups.

St Michael's ChurchSt Michael’s operates within the Diocese of Winchester, as part of the United Benefice of North Waltham, Steventon, Ashe and Deane.  The Associate Priest Revd Julia Foster and Associate Priest Chris Reader both live in the village. The Revd Ian Smale based in Overton is the Priest in Charge. Revd Julia Foster and her husband Dave (who is a trained Reader) live in the Rectory in North Waltham.

The present building dates back to 1865 when it was rebuilt following collapse in about 1850. However, it contains enough original masonry to show the development of the building through the Norman and Gothic periods.  Its history and features are described in a pamphlet written by Mr Richard Tanner, Chairman of the North Waltham, Steventon, Ashe and Deane History Society.  For further details visit www.nwsadhs.co.uk

St Michael's ChurchThe churchyard contains many memorials.  Details of the older ones and Church records have been deposited at Hampshire County Record Office in Winchester.  Current registers of baptisms, marriages and burials are kept in the Church and may be accessed on application to Reverend Foster.
