Police - News from PC Barbara Kelly

Important Information

There has been a series of distraction burglaries in the Basingstoke area; fortunately they have not occurred in the North Waltham/Steventon area.  It is generally elderly single females who are targeted in their own homes.  Any groups of males at the door MUST be treated with suspicion.  Stories used so far to deceive victims include:

  • Asking to retrieve their football / frisbee from the rear garden
  • Asking for a named person
  • Asking to borrow pen
  • Posing as officials including Policemen and Firemen

If you have elderly neighbours please check on them.  If they have security chains, get them to use it without exception.  If they get suspicious visitors, and in particular several males together, advise them NOT to answer the door and to phone 999 immediately.  Always always ask for identification, on every occasion.

Horses On The Roads

Appeal to all riders to wear your florescent jackets/tabards - I know a lot of you already do - to those who don't, being seen on a dark country lane is paramount to your safety. I f you are seen just a split second earlier because of your jacket a nasty accident/incident may be avoided.  To car drivers, can I ask you to be mindful of this issue.  Please be aware that horses frequently use the lanes and that you obey the Highway Code when passing them.

Tack Marking

If anyone from the local equine community has not had their tack security coded, then please get in touch with me. Tack theft in general is on the increase nationally. Having it security marked may not prevent it getting stolen, but it will assist greatly with its recovery and subsequent identification. It's a free service offered by myself, so get in touch.

Neighbourhood Watch Scheme

neighbourhood watch logoThere are Neighbourhood Watch schemes which cover the whole of North Waltham.  Most have been established for many years and continue to thrive.  The schemes are as follows:

Coldharbour, incorporating
Popham Lane and Yew Tree Road

Meadow Rise development

Church Road, incorporating
St Michaels Close
Elizabethan Rise development
Mary Lane, incorporating
Chapel Street and Cuckoo Close
Barley View

Each scheme has its own co-ordinator, who in turn comes under the Group Co-ordinator.  The basic principle allows for close liaison between the schemes and the Police and the free flow of information in both directions.  In this way each scheme member keeps an eye out for anything suspicious which can be reported quickly to their co-ordinator or directly to the police.  This information can then be passed on to each scheme and the information disseminated to as many members as possible.  In addition, information from the police can be passed in the same manner.  Community involvement is vital to the police in the fight against crime.  If you see anything suspicious then report it at the time.

For more information contact:
07776 172310, 01256 405314 or 0845 045 4545

The Neighbourhood Watch Schemes will continue to receive the full support of the Police.

Neighbourhood Watch - Update from PC Barbara Kelly

When I took on the beat 14 months ago I was told the village had 100% Neighbourhood Watch coverage, unfortunately this is not the case.  Although our 9 co-ordinators cover the village on the whole, some are covering 3 and 4 roads; this is simply not workable.  Ideally there should be one co-ordinator for each road.  The overall group co-ordinator, Brian Wall, also covers Chapel Stree, Mary Lane and Cuckoo Close, clearly this is a huge responsibility.  Having carried out the role for 15 years Mr wall is now ready to hand over the position as group co-ordinator if anyone is willing to take on the role.  Could any interested parties make themselve known to me or Brian so we can meet with the other co-ordinators and implement the changes as soon as possible?

I have been told that the information sometimes does not get through; I will therefore explain how it should work.  It is my responsibilit to email any relevant information or advice to each co-ordinator, they in turn should forward it on via email to each resident in their road.  Residents who are not on email should receive a printed copy through the door from the co-ordinator.  When NHW first started, the co-ordinators used to come to the police station, seek out the necessary information to be passed on aand then photocopy a sheet for each household which they then hand posted.  With this current age of technology the schemes now run as explained above which saves a lot of time, however, the expense of printing is now down to the co-ordinators.

It is obviously more efficient to run the scheme using email, that said if there is anyone out there who would like to be a co-ordinator but does not have a computer they can still be included, I am more than happy to do the photocopying under these circumstances rather than not have a scheme or being included in another road.

NHW is an excellent way of you learning first hand from the police what is occurring in your community.  Some people may like to bury their heads in the sand, if this is the case you do not have to be involved, just advise your co-ordinator.  I personally feel it is essential to make residents more aware, as this increases vigilance and makes for a safe community.

The roads which are being jointly covered and would benefit from an individual co-ordinator are as follows: Chapel Street and Cuckoo Close: currently covered by Brian Wall of Mary Lane.  Smiths Mead, Home Mead and Burydown Mead: currently covered by David Groves of Meadow Rise.  Cold Harbour: currently covered by Peter and Jackie Osmond of Yew Tree Road.  Elizabethan Rise, Old Barn Close, Well Close and Ramsholt Close: currently covered by Alan Purkiss of Longfield Close.  The Green and Steventon Road: currently covered by Richard Tanner of Church Road.

Could I urge anyone interested in becoming involved in taking on responsibility of co-ordinator for any of the above-mentioned roads please make contact with me or their co-ordinator as soon as possible.  Let's get 2008 off to a good start by sharing the load.

Finally, since PC Chris Brookes left the beat there have been huge changes in the way of Community Policing with the implementation of the Safe Neighbourhood Team.  We now have the help of a Policey Community Support Office, nthony Heard, and should have a designated Special Constable; however that role is not filled at this time.  I have been given the grand title of Beat Manager.  These are nationwide changes.  Unfortunately change isn' always for the best, as I'm sure most of you will say in this case.  I am well aware that under the old style policing, Chris carried out foot patrol more ofthe than I.  I am also aware that this is what villagers - and indeed I - want more than anything.  Believe me, this is the side of policing I prefer!  Please bear in mind that I cover 7 other villages and therefore need to balance my work amongst them, foot patrol included.  I also have increasing computer and paperwork which again takes me off the street.  I am committed to help and support you the villagers and will try my best to do so in this new role.  Thank you all for your continued support.
